Some Catch-Up
We interrupt our normal programming to bring you all a game of catch-up here at Political Bitches. Unfortunately, do to outside forces (*cough*midterms*cough*) this hasn’t been as kept up to date as we would like it to be, so let’s have a little news medley, shall we?
1. NY Governor Spitzer is caught in a prostitution scandal. These are always the types of stories I hate getting out about politicians, and it’s for the exact reason everyone else loves them getting out: people have an odd fascination with knowing what their public officials are doing with their private lives. Here’s an idea for those people who only care that he had *gasp* sex out of wedlock: he’s put his wife and children into an absolutely TERRIBLE position, and not only does this make him a jackass, it makes him a hypocrite. Generally, it’s not a good idea to buy sex and then go after prostitutes, Governor. I don’t give a damn that he risked his own health and career – the real problem here is he has exposed his family and the young woman (‘Kristin’ as she is known) to a great deal of public scrutiny. So let’s actually try focusing on that issue, as opposed to just being shell-shocked by the act, kay?
2. Obama: “I don’t know how somebody who is in second place is offering the vice presidency to the person who is first place.” I know a few people seem to feel this provides necessary reason to call Obama out for “arrogance”, but I don’t think that’s the case at all. No one is perfect in this race, but the Clinton camp just keeps on trying to use more and more tactics in order to bring about a benefit, when in reality, it’s just adding to the separation of the Democratic party. Sure, Obama is confident in his current lead, but at least when he was behind in delegates, he wasn’t offering lesser positions to Clinton.
3. Wright and Ferraro: Not helping. Guess what? This isn’t a color race. STFU. You’re only giving stupid people ridiculous things to say about these candidates because you can’t stop flapping your mouths for two seconds.
4. Sending Dick Cheney to the Middle East to lower oil prices. Riiiiight, let’s send Mr. Halliburton to convince OPEC to boost output. Furthermore, according to this merry band of shrubs, our tanking economy is to be blamed on the increase in oil prices! But never mind that war we spend millions of dollars on every day – no, that couldn’t possibly have anything to do with our economy or the high oil prices.
5. House supports revision the Federal Intelligence Surveillance Act. And of course, Bush isn’t happy about this, but what else would we expect? As a point of interest, this is the first time the House has held a secret meeting since 1983. Under these revisions, telecommunications companies can be sued for surveillance without warrant, which of course, would be getting rid of another ‘essential tool on terror’. Maybe one day we can wiretap and water board at the same time – double wammies, take that terrorists!!!!!

I haven’t actually commented here but I have been reading your blog for quite a while. I agree with you guys 100%. Your sarcasm is amazingly entertaining. =]
I was just watching FOX which is, for the most part, a waste of time but, they were talking about Obama and his pastor and all that jazz. I was seriously like, who the hell CARES?!?! Just because you associate with someone does not mean that you believe in their views. You might have been married by that pastor and had your children baptized by him but that has nothing to do with your views. People aren’t going after McCain or Clinton’s church, does it really matter what Wright says? People have to stop associating Obama with Wright.
I mean, I have friends who are Republicans, does that mean I believe in their views at all? No. It means that even though I don’t necessarily believe in the same things that they do I accept that they have their beliefs and that I have mine. People shouldn’t be mixing up Obama’s message and his views with his pastor’s.

Heh.
Sorry, my first comment and I’m basically ranting.

Once again, I agree wholeheartedly. Can’t wait until you and Elysa start a podcast (I’ve heard rumors…). Anyway, about Gov. Spitzer: The whole thing has been completely blown out of proportion. People in this society are so eager for some kind of a scandal that often, the valid discussions that can be made are completely missed. For example, Britney Spears: Instead of asking questions about the way this society views celebrities and how screwed up it is, all we can say is “Omg, she is SO crazy. I mean, OMG. Can you believe her?” And then there’s Spitzer. The one good thing that could come out of this ’scandal’ is discussion on prostitution in America, whether it’s right or wrong, and the distinction between escort companies and street prostitution. Unfortunately, I’ve only heard one news piece on this, which was on NPR last week. For some reason, all most people want is a scandal. Too bad there’s no room for intelligent discussion on the bigger picture such opportunities present.

before I start a rant, I wish you good luck on your midterms
1. If it’s not Britney having another meltdown, it’s a Governor caught in a prostitution scandal. Geez, as if hundreds of thousands of other men don’t do this. I fail to comprehend how they make this a big deal when a) there is a war going on in Iraq and b) the president just vetoed a bill against torture, and said it wasn’t torture. Not that they haven’t covered this, but save all of this news for the US Weekly and then leave it be!
2. While I do agree with what you said, and I am a Obama supporter, it was a slightly petty comment if you ask me. I didn’t actually hear him say this, but nonetheless, we could do without yet another thing to pin onto him. And if you call that arrogance, please tell me what Clinton spouting of “I have experience” every two seconds is.
3. I believe news anchors just get bore, and for their own personal enjoyment, dissect every living thing in sight so that the rest of the population has MORE to bitch about. And that includes people who want to pick at Obama more, or us sitting here, um, bitching about the news anchors. Either they want people attacking the politicians, or, apparently, attacking them. Know what I say? GET A LIFE!
4. http://www.nationalpriorities.org/costofwar_home<– that would be a website of the amount we’re spending on this Iraq war. And yet, as you said, we’re wondering why our economy got so fucked up? And why we’re paying 3 bucks a gallon for something that used to cost us a little over a dollar? Oh, and apparently the people in Iraq don’t seem quite so keen on giving us oil, for some odd reason so that doesn’t up the price either.
5. Well, thats one good thing our government has done. Because, if you don’t have a warrant to listen in to someone’s conversation, how could you even begin to think they’re a threat, unless of course, you’ve already been listening in to them. So I guess Bush is into implied powers as well as taking the Constitution literally at the same time. Because, obviously to him, searching a home with a warrant and listening in to people’s conversations with a warrant are two completely different things. I guess he never stopped to realize, there weren’t actual phones back when the Framers wrote the Constitution, but that listening in to phone calls wouldn’t possibly fit into that right now that we DO have them.
Okay, done with my mini-rant.

Spittzer? Is a jackass. He is a jackass to his wife and his children because he betrayed their trust. He is a hypocrite because he built a career on cracking doown on prostitution and family values, whatever they are. But.. seriously… how does that affect his ability to govern?

i really could care less about Spitzer having sex out of wedlock. I can understand frustration at his actions because he brought all of this media attention on people who didn’t want it. Then again, the media is an industry, and that is how it functions.
Here’s my issue: Spitzer committed a crime. Let’s focus less on the fact that it was sex. Less on the morality of it. Point blank, to hire a prostitute in the United States is a federal crime and for us, THAT is more important than what’s going to happen to his marriage/family (which we really have no business in).

About Obama I don’t see it as being arrogant it was the truth he is in front and it was a darn good comeback if people are reading into further than that than they need to introduce another foot between them and the TV set they are taking thins too seriously by half.

I hail from Illinois, a state with a long history of incredibly corrupt politicians and endless scandals. As such, it amuses me that the media is so highly publicizing this, when I can easily look back on a long history of scandals only in my short lifetime. The latest of these, of course, is Tony Rezko’s case, which has received some national attention because Obama bought a house off him a year ago. And yet, to my way of thinking, it’s much more interesting that our current Gov Rod Blagoievich is deeply embroiled in Rezko’s dealings. Surprise, surpise, he’s at least our third governor in a row to be involved in a major scandal.
To top it off, I overheard a conversation the other day where someone remarked that at least we didn’t have Spitzer for a governor. And the remark?
“Yea, well, we don’t know who Client 10 is, do we?”
